The main objective of DENANA is to identify criteria for the production of sustainable engineered nanoparticles (ENPs). In this project, we focus on ENPs based on CeO 2 , SiO 2 or Ag which are applied in lubricants, fuel additives, medical products, personal care and abrasives. The ENPs will be varied during the production process and tested with regard to their potential environmental risk. The DENANA consortium expects the systematic study to result in the identification of criteria required for an improved design of ENPs which meet technical standards but minimize environmental risk potential.
Long-term effects of the ENPs in waters, sediments and soils under conditions close to reality will be studied as well as the fate and the effects under controlled laboratory test systems. Based on the outcome of these tests the project provides early warning indicators required by national and international regulatory bodies for the risk quantification and decision support.
